Topic: IMPACT OF SMOKING ON SOCIETY

INTRODUCTION

Conscientisation is a popular education and social concept developed by Brazilian educational theorist Paulo Freire. It includes taking action against the oppressive elements in one's life that are illuminated by understanding.

As part of the B.Ed curriculum, I conducted a conscientisation programme during the teaching practice in the school St.Thomas Higher Secondary school , Kadampanad. I selected the topic "IMPACT OF SMOKING ON SOCIETY." I conducted the programme on 21  January 2019, in plus two commerce class.

According to the WHO, 6 million people die because of tobacco smoking and an estimated 600,000 individuals lose their lives due to second-hand smoke globally each year. A recent study found that smoking is related to about 20% adult mortality around the world. It is projected that smoking will cause the death of 8 million people every year by 2030 and 80% of these deaths will occur in low- and middle-income countries. Smoking is associated with increased the risk of cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases, stroke, and cancers of many organs of the body such as mouth, larynx, lungs, kidneys, cervix, and pancreas.Adolescents are vulnerable to starting smoking and becoming addicted to nicotine because they go through rapid hormonal and cognitive changes during their adolescence and they are influenced by cultural, social, family, and behavioral factors. It is estimated that about 5.6 million American adolescents will die prematurely due to diseases caused by smoking. Adolescent smokers are likely to become addicted to nicotine, and about 90% of adult smokers used to smoke regularly during their adolescence. 

OBJECTIVES

The main objectives for conducting this programme are as follows:

• To spread awareness among the students about hazards of tobacco,smoking cigarettes,shisha etc.
• To educate the students about the diseases and physical damages of tobacco and its affiliates.
• To help them to understand their individual role in the society for spreading awareness against these hazardous substances.
• To motivate the student to create a tobacco free society or smoking free society.
• To protect the students from he clutches of smoking.

REPORT

I decided to deal the topic in the form of a power point presentation.The presentation comprises of pictures,awareness videos, short film, news clipping,cartoon and all other necessary information about smoking.Initially there was a general discussion segment with the students.Most of the students actively participated i the discussion process.

After the general discussion segment i to the proceeded the power point presentation. It was made a interactive session.students enjoyed the presentation very much.I also explained the various necessary information about smoking to the students.

Various types of video's was showed to the students in the form of awareness video, short film,cartoon and news video. 

I also discussed the various health issues arising as a result of smoking which includes lung cancer, stroke , heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,asthma,reproductive effects in women , premature ,low birth weight in babies ,diabetes , blindness, cataract and age related macular degeneration , stomach cancer,pancreatic cancer,cervix cancer etc.

Finally i conclded the session by giving them a message

"IT IS IN YOU MOMENTS OF DECISION THAT YOUR DESTINY IS SHAPED"

it means everything you are and everything you have is because of a decision you once made.Decide to quit smoking and nothing will stop you.

And for winding up o the session a feedback was collected from the students and they said that they got more information about the worst side of smoking and other associated problems.They were also made to take a pledge that they will not smoke and will also motivate others to quit smoking.

CONCLUSION

The conscientisation programme on the IMPACT OF SMOKING ON SOCIETY helpedthe students to understand the dark face of smoking habit.The presentation helped students to broaden their consciousness to not to indulge in the habit of smoking.I think the programme was very effective.It helped to bring an awareness among the students .I was able to satisy the objectives of the programme. Every student had a active participation during the entire session.
